Hugging Glass

Objective: Designed a unique glass cup that 'hugs' other glasses, available in three colors plus clear, based on the client’s brief. The brief drew inspiration from the visual wobbliness of Jocken Holz’s designs and Alvar Aalto’s Aalto Vase.

My Role: Led the design, prototyping, and production phases. Converted initial concepts and references into client-ready designs, and provided detailed manufacturing quotes. Addressed budget constraints by offering local and offshore production options, including lead times, minimum order quantities, color options, and tooling costs.

Key Deliverables:

  • Visual concept and prototypes
  • Costing for production and tooling
  • Analysis of local vs. offshore manufacturing options

Outcome: Delivered an innovative design that met client specifications and utilized complex metal tooling for molding. The project explored rapid production techniques due to competitive budget constraints. Computer-aided design and CAM technologies ensured precise execution of the ‘hugging’ concept.

Collaboration: Worked independently with minimal direct collaboration due to lockdown restrictions. The project involved remote communication and iterative design refinements based on client feedback received through correspondence.
